Our History
Until recently, Friend was blessed with multiple quality childcare providers. However, in November of 2023, our largest licensed childcare provider was required to close their business due to financial difficulties and an inability to hire and retain quality providers. We have seen multiple families take their children up to 40 miles from our town to obtain childcare, and we know some families have declined employment in Friend due to a lack of childcare options.
Recognizing the dire need for quality affordable childcare in Friend, a group of concerned citizens began discussing how we can help our families. The group includes existing childcare providers, bankers, farmers, employers, school administrators, teachers, school board members, attorneys, elected officials, and business owners. We established a nonprofit entitled the Friend Learning Center and secured our 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. The core group for our initial meeting included existing childcare providers, bankers, farmers, employers, school administrators, teachers, school board members, attorneys, elected officials, and business owners.
Our Vision
At Friend Learning Center, we envision a world where every child is empowered to flourish and succeed. We envision a community where families feel supported, children feel cherished, and educators feel inspired to make a difference every day. Together, we strive to build a brighter future, one child at a time.
Our Mission
Providing a nurturing, safe, and stimulating environment where
every child is valued, supported, and encouraged to reach their
full potential. We believe in partnering with families,
communities, and educators to create a foundation for lifelong
learning and success, preparing children to thrive in an ever-
changing world with confidence, curiosity, and kindness.
Quality care, trust, and safety are the cornerstones of the services provided to children at the Friend Learning Center. Research-based developmentally appropriate practices will be utilized under the direction of a qualified director. We will implement a curriculum encompassing academic, social, and developmental growth, ensuring that children are adequately prepared to begin their school careers.
Family is the primary influence in a child’s life. We are committed to working collaboratively with the parents and children we serve through consistent communication and opportunities for parenting education, promoting best practices in early childhood development. We aim to ensure parents feel supported and encouraged in raising their children.
Access to reliable and affordable care is essential for today’s working families. It offers parents peace of mind knowing their child is safe and secure, allowing working parents to focus on their workday. Additionally, high-quality care is a top priority for families with young children and can be used as a recruitment tool for local businesses.
The strength of our community lies in the people who live in Saline County. The support we will provide our families extends to the childcare providers in our communities through training and curriculum resources. Additionally, we commit to providing a space and opportunities for community groups to utilize the Friend Learning Center Family for activities that may further support our children and families.
